How To Rent A Zagster Bike

How do I sign up?

Sign up is fast and easy! Simply download the app and fill in the blanks at each step.

How do I rent a bike on the mobile app?

Go to a Zagster station at your bike share and pick out the Zagster bike you'd like to ride. The bike’s number can be found on labels near the handlebars and on the keypad.

BORROW:.

  1. Log in to the Zagster app on your phone. If you are already in the app, tap “Ride” at the bottom of the screen
  2. Type the bike number in the grey box
  3. Tap the "START A RIDE" button.
  4. You’ll get an unlock code on the next screen
  5. Locate the keypad on the back of the bike. If there are keys numbers 1-9 and “ENT”, press “ENT”, followed by the unlock code, then ENT again. Make sure to press each button slowly and firmly.The box will flash the "MESSAGE" and "READY" lights once you've entered your code correctly.

Pull the lockbox lid up and use the key inside to open the U-Lock. Once the bike is free from the station, use the key to close the U-Lock

Return the key to the lockbox and press the lid closed until you hear a click Place the U-Lock in the bike basket or through the holster on the rear rack. You’re ready to ride! Have fun and stay safe!

If there are keys numbered 1-4, enter the unlock code and the ring lock on the rear wheel will slide open.Remove the docking cable and head out! Have fun and stay safe!

LOCK: Any time you make a stop, you must lock the bike to a fixed object.

If you have a U-lock: Press “ENT”, your unlock code, then “ENT” to open the key box. Lock the frame (between the seat and the handlebars) to a fixed object like a pole, bike rack, etc. Return the key to the lockbox and make sure that it’s fully closed before leaving the bike. When you’re ready to ride again, unlock as in step 5 above.

If you have a Ring Lock: Hold down the “4” button and slide down the orange tab on the right side of the rear wheel. If you are not at a Zagster station, loop the on-board docking cable (in the orange tube on the back right of the bike) around a fixed object and insert it into the lock. If you are at a Zagster station, insert the station docking cable.

RETURN: When you're back at a Zagster station , lock the bike to the station. Once the bike is fully secured to the station, open the app and click "END RIDE". You must be at a Zagster station before ending your ride in the app.

How do I borrow a Zagster bike via text message?

It’s simple, just like riding a bike! Go to a Zagster bike station and:

  1. Text the word “Start” and the bike’s number to us at 202-999-3924. For example, text “Start 100” to rent bike 100. The bike’s number can be found on labels near the handlebars and on the lockbox.
  2. We’ll text you back a locking code and instructions on how to use it.
  3. Release the bike and remove the bike from its station. Always lock the bike up if you’re not riding it.
  4. When you’re done, lock the bike back to its Zagster station and text us “End” to end your rental.

Where do I return my Zagster bike?

You are required to return and lock your Zagster bike to any Zagster station in your community's bike share program before you end your ride by app or text.

You may temporarily leave a bike locked to any secure bike rack as long as you keep the rental active for the entire time it is left there.

All Zagster stations are clearly marked by Zagster signage. Do not leave a bike anywhere other than a Zagster station unless you are currently renting it.You may be charged for replacement of a lost or stolen bike, so please return your bike to its station safely!

Can I take more than one bike at a time?

Zagster does not allow members to borrow more than one bike at the same time for safety and liability reasons. If you know someone else who would like to ride a Zagster bike, they will need to join Zagster to rent their own bike. Just point them to zagster.com/ride so they can sign up!

Available for iOS and Android, our mobile app gets you rolling your Zagster bike share quickly and easily, so you can enjoy the ride!

Where can I get the Zagster mobile app?

I’m having a problem with the mobile app.

If anything doesn't seem to be working right, or you see a system error message press either “Report a problem” if you’re on an active ride, or select “Contact Support” in the menu. If neither of those work please send an email to [email protected]. Describe what's going on, include a screenshot if possible, and we'll get back to you within 24-hours.

Billing & Account Management

I forgot my password, help!

I want to change my bike share location.

If you'd like to change your location from one Zagster bike share program to another, please email your request to [email protected]. Include the email and mobile number associated with your account in the email.

How do I close my Zagster account?

If you wish to close your account, you can do so at any time by logging into ride.zagster.com, clicking the 'Account' button, and scrolling to the bottom of the page. You'll have to enter your password and click the Terminate button to close your account.

I was charged a fee incorrectly. How do I get a refund?

Sometimes mistakes happen. If you think were charged a fee in error, contact us at [email protected]. We’ll need to see screenshots of your text messages with us relating to the bike rental you were charged for, so please send those as attachments to speed up the process.

I forgot to end my rental on time. Please forgive me!

We’ve got your back! Zagster offers a one-time “forgetfulness forgiveness” refund on your late fee. Just send us an email at [email protected] and we’ll get it taken care of. If you already used your one-time refund, sorry! Try setting a timer on your phone or maybe tying a string on your finger...

Keypads & Ring Locks

How do I use the locking system?
  1. Open the app, enter the bike number, and press start ride. The app will generate a keypad code.
  2. Enter the code onto the keypad on the rear rack of the bike. You will hear a loud click, disengaging the ring lock.
  3. Pull out the docking cable and you’re set to ride.
  4. When you’re ready to end your trip, head to any Zagster station and press the round, orange lock button on the keypad to engage the ring lock. You should see the keypad blinking green at you.
  5. Reach down a push down the orange tab on the ring lock to secure the bike.
  6. Place the docking cable back into the top of the ring lock and press “End ride” in the app.

How do I lock my bike mid-trip?
  1. Press the round, orange lock button. You should see the green light flash.
  2. Push the orange ringlock tab down.
  3. Pull the rear docking cable out of it’s orange housing and wrap it around secure post, and plug it into the port at the top of the ringlock

Do NOT end your rental in the app unless you are at a Zagster station!

My code doesn’t work.

Our unlock codes re-generate every 3-5 minutes. We recommend first re-trying the code that’s being shown. If you are getting a red error light, please try starting a new ride or waiting for a new code. If that’s not working, we need to update the keypad, and you to report this issue to us by calling our 24/7 help line: 202-999-3924.

The orange tab isn’t sliding down.

First check to make sure none of the spokes of the bike wheel are blocking the Ring Lock from closing. If that’s all clear, be sure to press the orange, round, lock button before attempting to close the ring lock. If you cannot secure the bike, please call us at our 24/7 help line, 202-999-3924, as you may be held responsible should the bike be found off-station. We have a few more ideas that could help!

Why is the red light flashing?

This means that a code has been entered incorrectly, or that the keypad is having trouble communicating to the ring lock. Please try entering your code again. If it’s still flashing red, please try starting a new ride or waiting for a new code. If that’s not working, we need to update the keypad, and you to report this issue to us by calling our 24/7 help line: 202-999-3924.

What is bike sharing?

Bike sharing allows you to ride a bike when you want it, without having to own it. The Zagster fleet is made up of durable, easy to ride bikes located at a station near you. Tell me about the Zagster bikes.

Zagster bikes are fun, comfortable, and easy for anyone to ride! The frame is a step-through design that’s easy to get on and off, and provides a low center of gravity for rock-solid stability. Each bike is equipped with 8 gears, front and rear LED lights, a bell, and a convenient front basket. Fenders and a chain guard keep you looking clean, and a locking system that allows you to lock the bike anywhere during your adventures.

Do Zagster bikes fit me?

Thanks to our step through frame and adjustable height seat, Zagster bikes can be used by pretty much anyone.

To set your seat height, flip open the seat release lever, which is located where the seat post meets the bike frame. Raise or lower the seat to a comfortable place, and then close the lever tightly to lock the seat. Make sure the lever is closed all the way before riding.

Is Zagster safe?

Zagster bikes are stable, heavy-duty machines. They are consistently maintained by professional mechanics and outfitted with lights, reflectors, chain guards, and a bell. We work with our partners to provide bike safety education and encourage all riders to wear a helmet.

A few tips for staying safe on the road:

  • Follow the rules of the road. Stop for lights and yield to pedestrians.
  • Beware car doors: Ride at least 3 feet away from parked cars.
  • Stay out of vehicles' blind spots.
  • Ride with traffic, never against it.

Are Zagster bikes available all year long?

Zagster makes every effort to keep bikes available year-round. In some harsh winter climates, Zagster and our partners may decide to seasonally close networks and temporarily remove bikes from service. We will alert you if this happens.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Zagster strongly encourages anyone riding a bike to wear a helmet. Some Zagster bike share programs require riders to wear helmets, please check out the additional FAQs on your specific bike share's page for more information.

Bike Support

My Zagster bike isn’t working properly.

Please call us at 202-999-3924, email [email protected], or message us in the mobile app right away with details on what’s happening. Let us know what the bike number and issue is, along with the Zagster station at which you will secure the bike.

Be sure to return the bike to the nearest Zagster station. Once it’s locked there, end your rental. We’ll get the bike fixed up ASAP, but in the meantime you’re free to rent a new bike and get on your way.

I’ve had a crash on my Zagster bike!

If anyone is injured, call 911.

Contact us at 202-999-3924 as soon as possible to report the crash. We’ll email you an Incident Report that you’ll need to complete with details on what happened. If the police are not yet involved in the incident, we may also need you to contact your local police department to report the crash.

My Zagster bike has been lost/stolen!

Please alert us as soon as possible in the event of any potential loss or theft of Zagster bikes. Email [email protected], or call us at 202-999-3924, we’ll walk you through what to do.

If necessary, we’ll also email you an Incident Report that you’ll need to complete rather than having you file a Police Report.
