How does Zagster work?

Can I rent more than one bike at a time?

Zagster does not allow members to borrow more than one bike at the same time for safety and liability reasons. If you know someone else who would like to ride a Zagster bike, they will need to join Zagster to rent their own bike. Just point them to the mobile app or so they can sign up!

Where can I return my bike?

You are required to return and lock your Zagster bike to a Zagster station in your community's bike share before you end your ride in the app or via text.

You may temporarily leave a bike locked to any secure bike rack as long as you keep the rental active for the entire time it is left there.

How do I borrow a bike via text message?
  1. Text the word “Start” and the bike’s number to us at 202-999-3924. For example, text “Start 100” to rent bike 100. The bike’s number can be found on labels near the handlebars and on the keypad.
  2. We’ll text you back a locking code and instructions on how to use it.
  3. Release the bike and remove the bike from its station. Always lock the bike up if you’re not riding it.
  4. When you’re done, lock the bike back to its Zagster station and text us “End” to end your rental.

Are Zagster bikes available all year long?

Zagster makes every effort to keep bikes available year-round. In some harsh winter climates, Zagster and our partners may decide to seasonally close networks and temporarily remove bikes from service. We will alert you if this happens.

How do I sign up?

We’ve got your back! Zagster offers a one-time “forgetfulness forgiveness” refund on your late fee. Just send us a note through the Support section of the app and we’ll get it taken care of.

How much does it cost to ride?

Pricing, membership plans, and eligibility vary between our bike sharing programs. To find information specific to your bike share, please go to and select your bike share.

How do I close my Zagster account?

If you wish to close your account, you can do so at any time by logging into, clicking the 'Account' button, and scrolling to the bottom of the page. You'll have to enter your password and click the Terminate button to close your account.

I want to change my bike share location.

Currently each phone number can only be associated with one Zagster bike share. If you'd like to change your location from one Zagster bike share program to another, please email your request to

Can I let someone else use my Zagster Account?

No. You are responsible for any bike checked out under your account, as detailed in the Rider Agreement. Your account will be charged accordingly if anyone else is using your account to gain access to a bike and your account will be suspended.

Am I financially responsible for the bike while I have it checked out?

Yes. As detailed in the Rider Agreement, you are responsible for your bike while it is checked out on your account. Should something happen to the bike during your rental, your account will be charged accordingly.

My bike is not unlocking.

Should you have trouble connecting to the ring lock on your bike, we suggest turning Bluetooth functionality off and on again or force quitting the app and re-opening. If the app reports the bike is Unlocked, but the orange tab is still down, please be sure to try nudging up the orange tab as it may be resting on a spoke of the bike wheel.

My ride is not ending in the app.

For rides to end on the app, the ring lock must be fully secure, with the orange tab down and the docking cable inserted. If your bike is secure and the ride is still not ending, please be sure you are near the bike and your wifi/data connection is strong. Please try resetting your bluetooth connection by force closing and re-opening the app. Should you still encounter issues, please let us know through the Support portal of the app.

What should I do if I find an abandoned bike?

If you find a Zagster bike abandoned (not locked at a Zagster station or to a public bike rack), please call us 24/7 at 202-999-3924. If you are a Zagster member, please open your app to the ride screen and see if the bike shows up on the list of available bikes. This will help us find that bike and return it to service.

What if my bike is lost or stolen?

Please email, or call us at 202-999-3924 as soon as possible in the event of any potential loss or theft of Zagster bikes. If necessary, we’ll also email you an Incident Report that you’ll need to complete. Your account may be charged for the cost of recovery or the full cost to replace the bike depending on the circumstances of the loss or theft. Please note, you must contact Zagster within 24 hours of the loss or theft of your Zagster bike.

How can I make sure the bike I’ve chosen is safe for me to ride?

Once you check out a bike, be sure to adjust the seat to your desired height, squeeze the brakes to ensure there’s good resistance, spin each wheel to ensure proper rotation, and check the tires to make sure they’re well-inflated. Should you find any issues with the bike, please re-lock the bike to end your ride and report the issue to us via the “Support” section of the app menu.

How can I ride safely?

There are cycling laws that riders should follow to help ensure their safety:

  • Follow all traffic signals and signage
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Do not ride on sidewalks
  • Ride with traffic, not in an opposite direction
  • Avoid distractions - do not wear headphone in both ears or use your phone while riding
  • Use hand signals as often as possible to make clear to others when you’re turning

Are helmets required to ride with Zagster?

It is always recommended for Zagster riders to wear helmets. Helmets are proven to greatly reduce the risk of head injury in an accident.

What if I’m involved in a crash?

If anyone is injured, call 911. Contact us at 202-999-3924 within 24 hours to report the crash. We’ll email you an internal Incident Report that you’ll need to complete with details about what happened. If the police are not yet involved in the incident, we may also need you to contact your local police department to report the crash.
